Why choose Cosmos Midwifery?

When planning a homebirth, why should you look into birthing with Cosmos Midwifery?

  • 40+ combined years of experience - As midwives, Chloë and Jenna have both practiced in hospital practices (private and public), Birth Centers (in-hospital and free-standing birth centers), and homebirth.  We’ve both practiced as birth and postpartum doulas, as well as registered nurses (Jenna in the Emergency Room and Chloë in a reproductive surgical center) before becoming midwives.

  • Two-midwife practice - Both of us have practiced in large midwifery practices and Cosmos Midwifery was actually started as a solo practice.  However, being in a two-midwife practice has allowed us to expand our practice to care for more clients more comprehensively.  We’re able to take breaks to keep ourselves healthy and when we’re together we can spend more time brainstorming best care practices for our clients.  If two people are in labor at the same time, we’re able to split up so that we don’t need to call a back-up midwife.

  • Evidence based care - We emphasize the evidence behind any recommendation, while understanding that the culture surrounding research on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is complex and doesn’t always reflect the lived experiences of our clients.

  • Integrative care throughout prenatal, birth, and postpartum period - Our clients have access to our extensive referral network for all kinds of care modalities throughout pregnancy and postpartum.  Beyond the care that we provide directly to our clients, we also provide visits with a Lactation Consultant, Postpartum Doula, and Pelvic Floor Therapist during the postpartum period as part of our package.

  • True informed consent - We prioritize true informed consent in our relationships with clients and their families.  There is never a moment during care during which we will state, “It’s time for an exam, lie down.”  During pregnancy as well as labor and birth, it’s always a conversation.  We always discuss risks of an intervention as well as risks to avoiding the intervention, why other clients might or might not choose the intervention, and what other options there are.

  • Communication and education - We always want to be available to our clients.  You can reach out to us by email, text, and phone 24/7.  The phone number goes to the on-call midwife at all times, and both midwives respond to emails daily during the week and occasionally on the weekends.  We would much rather be woken up by you in the middle of the night and be able to tell you that whatever you're calling about is nothing to worry about than to sleep the whole night and talk to you in the morning when you’ve been panicking all night.
